Undoubtedly, mooting will be impressive to any employer as it shows public speaking skills, the ability to think on your feet and competence in legal research. It can also help you with your studies at University as it gives you a chance to put into practice some of the legal principles which you learn in lectures. But, most importantly, mooting is a fun experience which allows you to meet new people throughout the society and enhance your confidence.

Our largest competition and one that you can get involved in regardless of previous experience is the Devon Chambers Internal Mooting Competition. This is the largest internal competition we run. In previous years the final has taken place in prestigious locations such as the Supreme Court and Lincolns Inn. The competition consists of five rounds with judges from the law school, leading law firms and Chambers all helping to score, with the winner receiving a mini-pupillage with Devon Chambers.

This year we will be participating in a varsity competition with Bristol University. It consists of one round for each year group, so all ages and abilities are invited to get involved. Not only is this a great way to show off your mooting abilities, but it's also a fun competition which allows you to represent Exeter with the rest of Bracton Law Society.

For those of you who are keen to take part in more competitive competition, we will also be entering National and International competitions such as the Jean Pitchet Competition and the Blackstones’ Criminal Advocacy competition. In these competitions, participants will receive a network of support provided both through Bracton Law Society and the Law School in terms of coaching and practice rounds.

We will be holding a handful of events throughout the year to help you all progress and feel confident when preparing for and participating in a moot. In the first term we will be holding a series of five workshops aimed at novice mooters to help increase confidence and explain key elements of mooting. Additionally, we will be inviting representatives from leading law firms to help you develop your advocacy and mooting skills at a higher level.

We are excited to develop the mooting programme and encourage you to get involved in the many opportunities we will offer. Make sure you like our BLS Mooting page on Facebook and connect with us on LinkedIn to stay in touch – we look forward to meeting you all soon!
